The Crossroads
“The journey begins,” she said, as if announcing it would make the road shorter. Mara only shrugged and shouldered the pack.
They had a map, a water skin, and an author's note — their grandmother's — folded into the lining of a coat. The note ended with an ellipsis… and nothing else.

Rain
The rain came on the third day, soft at first and then relentless. They sheltered in a chapel whose door had long since been carried off for firewood.
Mara read the grandmother's note again by candlelight. It still ended mid-sentence.

“We're here,” Mara said. Her sister didn't answer; she was already knocking.
